It’s not only your every day person that gets the wrong side of the law. Here are some of the celebrities that you wouldn’t  have guessed spent time in jail.

Actor, Robert Downey Jr, was sentenced to 180 days behind bars for violating his probation in 1997. It is said that Downey had woken on a few occasions after being attacked, in a pool of his own blood. 

Only two years later he was sentenced to a further three years after failing to attend a drug test ordered by the court. Only twelve months into the sentence, Robert Downey Jr was released by a judge. 

Singer, Lauryn Hill, was ordered to serve three months in prison in 2013. This was due to her failing to file her taxes. In addition to this, Hill then had to serve an additional three months of home confinement and a year of on probation. On top of this she was ordered to pay the taxes she owed in the first place, and any penalties associated with this.

Believe it or not, Martha Stewart was sentenced to five months in prison in 2004. This was due to obstruction of justice, conspiracy and also making false statements to an authority during a fraud investigation. Stewart spoke of her time in prison saying “It was horrifying and no one, no one, should have to go through that kind of indignity really except for murderers, and there are a few other categories, but no one should have to go through that.”

Actor, Sean Penn was sentenced to serve 60 days. This was after attacking an extra on set. Penn did not have to serve his full sentence, and was instead released from jail early. 

Christian Slater was sentenced to prison time after assaulting his girlfriend in 1997. The actor served three months. Slater had a previous conviction, in which he spent ten days in jail for drunk driving in 1989. 

Lil’ Kim served an entire year in prison after lying to a jury. The rapper lied about how her friend was involved in a shooting in 2001. 

O.J Simpson is no stranger to police sirens. The American football star was never officially charged for the murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, however the star already had a criminal record prior to her death. In 2008 Simpson was sentenced to serve 33 years in prison, this was for armed robbery and kidnapping. The whole 33 year sentence would never be served though, as O.J was released on parole just 9 years later, in 2017.

Singer Chris Brown served a number of months behind bars in 2014. This is due to him violating his probation, following his assault on his girlfriend at the time, Rihanna. The attack on Rihanna took place in 2009, five years prior to his parole violation. 

Mike Tyson was charged and convicted of rape in the 1990’s. Tyson served a total of three years in prison before being released although he still insists he is innocent.
